GST Registration Rejected? Common Reasons and Fixes

Applied for GST registration and got rejected? Don’t panic — it happens more often than you think. Thousands of businesses face GST registration issues every day due to small, avoidable mistakes like incorrect document uploads, mismatched details, or missing information.

In this blog, we’ll uncover the top reasons why GST registration applications get rejected and show you exactly how to resolve them. Whether you’re applying for the first time or reapplying after a rejection, this guide will help you move forward with confidence.

Who is required to register for GST?

Businesses crossing the prescribed turnover limit must register under GST: –

  • For Goods – Any business whose aggregate turnover exceeds ₹40 lakhs in a financial year is mandatorily required to obtain GST registration.
  • For Services – Any business whose annual turnover surpasses ₹20 lakhs is mandatorily required to obtain GST registration.
  • For Special States (Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland) – In special category states, the threshold limit for mandatory GST registration is ₹10 lakhs (instead of ₹20/40 lakhs in other states).

How to get GST Registration?

  • To get registered under GST, the business needs to fill Form REG-01 on the GST portal and upload documents like PAN, Aadhaar, address proof, bank account details, etc.
  • Once the form is submitted, a GST officer will review the application and grant approval if all details are found to be in order.

What are the reasons for rejection of GST Registration?

GST officer may reject the application due to following reasons –

  • Incorrect or Incomplete Details: If details are missing or incorrect with your documents then application may be rejected.
  • Incorrect or Incomplete Documents: If documents are missing, unclear, or incorrect, your application may be rejected.
  • PAN–Aadhaar Mismatch: Mismatched details between your PAN and Aadhaar can trigger automatic rejection.
  • Invalid Address Proof: Unverifiable or incorrect address documents often lead to rejection.
  • Bank Account Validation: If the account details are not validated due to incorrect information, the application may be rejected.
  • No Response to Queries: If the GST officer raises a query and you don’t respond within 7 working days, your application will be rejected.
  • False Information: Using fake documents or inaccurate info can lead to rejection and penalties.

How to Fix GST Registration Rejection Issues?

Identify the Reason for Rejection by log in to the GST portal using your credentials. Check the remarks or deficiency memo issued by the GST officer, usually in the form of Form GST REG-03 (for clarification requests) or Form GST REG-05 (for rejection)

Address the specific Issues; some common fixes are mentioned below:

  • Provide Accurate Details: While filing GST Registration form, provide accurate details relating to Business, contact, Address, Additional place of Business, etc.
  • Upload Clear & Correct Documents: Upload legible, valid, and updated documents. Common required documents include PAN card, Aadhar card, Address proof, Bank Account proof, Business Registration certificate. Make sure the documents match the details entered in the form.
  • Ensure Correct PAN and Legal Name: Your PAN must match the legal name of the business as per the Income Tax database. Mismatches between PAN and the business name led to automatic rejection.
  • Respond Promptly to Queries: If the GST officer issues a query or clarification, respond within 7 working days. Use the ARN (Application Reference Number) to track status and reply via the portal.

Always double-check your application before submitting — a small mistake can lead to delays or rejection.
